It's best to start using AdWords Editor when you start out right from the start you will need to start using when you have lots of advertising campaigns.

You should separate your campaigns into search network and content network. Don't mix them. Also as you tune your advertising over time you should have a separate ad group for each keyword. Adwords editor will help you do this, so it's a good idea to use it from the start.

Writing Good PPC Ads

The search networks and content networks have two different types of buyers.

Good Search Network Ads

Writing PPC ads for search networks is all about relevancy. People are seeking for a specific thing. They are a "thirsty crowd" they are in a buying mode. You need just need to say that you have "exactly" what they want. You don't need to be very creative. Be direct, relevancy is king.

Don't make your search engine ads. too creative. Creativity is for the content network.

Try to have the main keyword on every line of your Ad. This will give you a high google score and the lowest rate in terms of cost per click. Also it will ensure you will only get people who will most likely buy.

Dynamic Ads with dynamic keyword insertion do  not work that well. They don't help your relevancy as much as people think.

Good Content Network Ads

Most people have given up on the content network as a result of the spam scraper sites advertising adsense ads.

With the search network, you are advertising to passive buyers. Your job is to convert them into buyers. This is where you can really shine as an internet marketer. You have a lot less competition usually and there are masses more traffic than search. The idea is to build desire in passing traffic as they are not in a buying mood. You have to work harder on your sales copy and keep some sort of continuity with the content they are viewing. Make sure your landing pages matches your advertisement.

The trick. Grab peoples attention. Some tactics.

  • Current newsworthy theme based ads
  • Use unusual characters and numbers to catch attention e.g. (!, ?,  @, 90%, "")
  • Be Negative or shock them (e.g. Is it a scam)
  • Call out to them or ask questions e.g. Hey You "Smoke" Breath?
  • Leave something incomplete and sell a story.  "millionaire overnight just by..". Make sure your continue the story. Continuity is Vital

It works best with lead generation and selling very low price items. Impulse buying items are usually very low price e.g. chewing gum at the checkout. You will need some sort of upsell and lead generation for higher ticket items.

Good Ad Headlines

The single best place to find good headlines ideas for PPC especially for the content network (or for that matter emails or for sales letter headings) is digg.com .  Also popurls.com is good. You may notice most of the top ads are :how to .."  or "top 10 reasons" type headings.

Search with criteria "most digs, all stores, title only". Make sure check the age of the article as well when comparing each title.

popurls.com is a dynamic update site used by journalists a lot. You can actually see the market moving. It's an aggregation of a number of sites like digg, google news, yahoo news, del.icio.us etc. of the biggest current most popular stories. Watch for stories becomming common to all the aggregators.
